Application only available from August 1st until August 31st

In relation to the beginning of studies in the summer/fall of 2024, it has been a request from Copenhagen Municipality (Københavns Kommune) that newly admitted students in Copenhagen with urgent housing needs could be extraordinarily prioritized.

It is NOT a “first come, first served”-list, so you do NOT have to be ready by your computer in order to be first.

Please note, that you are not eligible to apply for accommodation through CIU if you have less than two semesters of studies in Copenhagen. Exchange students for only one semester are therefore not eligible to apply for accommodation through CIU and we advise those students to apply for accommodation elsewhere.

NB! It has been decided by the Copenhagen Municipality that master and PhD students are not eligible to apply for the Study Start List 2024 as they are not considered to be ‘new’ students. However, master students can apply through CIU at the regular waiting list.

You are NOT eligible to apply for the Study Start List 2024 if you:

  • Have less than two semesters of study in Copenhagen (this also applies for the regular waiting list at CIU)
  • Start a master or PhD education. A master or PhD student is not considered a newly admitted student.
  • Are a single student with child/children
  • Are two people applying together
  • Are two people with child/children
  • Are going to study in Næstved, Køge or Helsingør
  • Are going to study in Lyngby-Taarbæk or Roskilde Kommune, e.g. DTU or RUC

You may be able to apply for student housing via the regular waiting list on mit.s.dk, though.

As an approved applicant on the Study Start List you will receive housing offers that:

  • Are one-room accommodations
  • Cost maximum 3.500 DKK a month, excluding eventual electricity costs / 4.000 DKK a month if it is possible to receive housing benefits
  • Are located within maximum one hour’s commute from your educational institution

NB! All the places offered through the Study Start List are 1-room accommodations where it is only possible for ONE person to live. If you are only interested in places where you can live with someone else (e.g. co-applicant and/or children) you should not apply for the Study Start List.

CIU are sending out housing offers to approved applicants on the Study Start List in August. The Study Start List will be discontinued on the 30th of November 2024 which means that CIU stops sending out offers via the Study Start List. From this date, the regular waiting list on mit.s.dk will be the only active waiting list.

How to Apply for the Study Start List 2024

It is required that you are an applicant with CIU in order to be considered for the Study Start List. Be sure to register an application at mit.s.dk. After you have made sure that you are a regular applicant at CIU, you should read the guidelines for signing up for the Study Start List 2024 and upload the required documents. This means that you have to do the following in order to register:

  1. Make sure that you are a regular applicant at CIU
    and
  2. Sign up for the Study Start List under “My Profile” (will only be visible if you are starting an education in August or September 2024).
    and
  3. Upload the necessary documents

You cannot be approved as an applicant on the Study Start List before these three steps have been executed!

You must upload the following documents:

  1. Study documentation: documentation for your enrollment at an education in Copenhagen and
  2. a copy of your yellow social security card (with the last 4 digits of the cpr-number blurred out) OR documentation of your residency abroad.

Here you can see examples of approved study documentation from 2022:
Example: University of Copenhagen – Letter of Enrollment 2022
Example: Copenhagen Business School – Letter of Enrollment 2022
Example: University College Copenhagen – Letter of Enrollment 2022

You will not be able to sign up for the Study Start List without uploading the necessary documents. You have until August 31 to provide the documents.

NB! You will NOT receive confirmation if you are approved for the Study Start List.

You will hear from s.dk when you get a housing offer on the Study Start List.

Make sure that you meet the demands for the Study Start List.

Make sure that you can be considered for the Study Start List and read about what kind of documentation is necessary below (Demands and Documentation).

How does it work and which rules apply?

When you sign up for the Study Start List you apply for all of the CIU accommodations in Copenhagen that observe the before mentioned conditions, including accommodation in e.g. Ballerup or Brønshøj. This means that you have the chance of getting a housing offer on Vesterbro (in the centre of Copenhagen) as well as in Ballerup (West of Copenhagen). You cannot prioritize among the accommodations. You cannot choose, for example, only to be offered accommodations with their own kitchen or where pets are allowed.

You can sign up for the Study Start List from August 1st until August 31st at mit.s.dk. It is NOT a “first come, first served”-list, so you do NOT have to be ready by your computer in order to be first.

Consequences of rejecting or not responding to a housing offer from the Study Start List:
  1. If you reject your housing offer or fail to answer within the deadline, you will no longer be considered as in urgent need of housing at the Study Start List, and therefore you will be transferred to the regular waiting list.
  2. If you have already rejected one offer on the ordinary waiting list, and you reject or fail to answer within the deadline to the offer you get on the Study Start List, your application will automatically be reset. You will not be eligible to apply for the Study Start List again, but you can sign up for the ordinary waiting list. Offers on the Study Start List can be sent out from August 1st to November 30th.

If you are approved for the Study Start List your place on the waiting list will be determined from the calculation:

Regular waiting list seniority + distance to educational institution = waiting list position

This means that an applicant, who has been an active applicant on mit.s.dk since June 1st, will get a housing offer sooner than a similar applicant, who has been active on mit.s.dk since June 21st.

NB! Unfortunately, we are not able to estimate when you will receive a housing offer.

Demands and Documentation

Your nationality is not important, however you must meet the criteria of CIU for admittance, such as age, economy etc. Your education MUST begin between August 1st 2024 and September 30th 2024.

You can be considered for the Study Start List, if you meet these demands:

  1. You are a newly admitted student in the greater Copenhagen area (Holbæk, Haslev, Slagelse, Roskilde, Lyngby, Køge, and Ringsted are NOT considered a part of Copenhagen)
    AND
  2. You have more than one hour of transport from your present residence to your future educational institution when travelling with public transport. CIU will check if you have more than one hour of transport.

The necessary documentation of study must be uploaded on mit.s.dk, before you can be approved as an applicant at the Study Start List.

Approved documentation is:

  1. Copy of your acceptance/enrollment letter – it has to be clear what studies and which educational institution you have been admitted at, and when your studies start.
  2. A copy of your yellow social security card (with the last 4 digits of the cpr-number blurred out) or documentation of your residency abroad.

Below you see examples of approved study documentation from 2022:

Example: Copenhagen Business School – Letter of Enrollment 2022
Example: University College Copenhagen – Letter of Enrollment 2022

You will NOT receive confirmation if you have been approved for the Study Start List.
